Cell metabolism can be improved by modifying the surface properties of the cell membrane. Polymeric membranes were modified by protein adsorption, and the changes to surface free energy and wetting recorded.
Different membranes reacted differently to the modification, with changes to contact angle with test liquids measured. A rise in surface free energy promoted liver specific functions, and the rate of ammonia elimination was found to increase with surface free energy.
