History

From KSV Instruments to Attension – our story is best expressed by the satisfaction of our customers. Whether they are prestigious universities or renowned companies, their reputation for excellence and quest for perfection means that they expect only the best.

The Attension story started back in 1980 when KSV Chemicals Ltd, was established in Helsinki, Finland, with the mission to develop advanced chemicals. As no appropriate technology was available at the time to properly study such innovative compounds, Oy KSV Instruments Ltd was spun off to develop and commercialize innovative scientific instruments. Over the years, unique technologies developed at KSV Instruments became essential in a number of research areas, rapidly making KSV Instruments the world leader in surface chemistry.

The mission was extremely ambitious; to combine the very latest theoretical know-how of global LB research with the latest sensor development, instrumentation, and computer know-how, to create family of precise, robust, user friendly and automated LB research instruments. This striving towards perfection without compromises resulted in a dominant market position in this niche business area, which has lasted for almost three decades. In fact, many of the original instruments are still in use today, which serves as a demonstration of their quality and durability.

The core of the LB instrumentation was a proprietary ultra-sensitive electronic balance. During the expansion of the business in the early 90’s it was only natural that this balance technology was utilized in developing force tensiometers to measure surface tension and interfacial tensions of liquids. Shortly after that the same desire to utilize the latest technologies led to the development of optical tensiometers, again among the first ones in the world. The same striving for perfection and reluctance to compromise led to a full family of state-of-the-art tensiometers, the Attension tensiometers.

We continue our journey with the same enthusiasm, constantly innovating and delivering the precision tensiometers with the best user experience our customers have come to expect.
