Firefighters have long used foams to help quench fires. It has been noted that a small addition of some polymers significantly lengthen foam lifetimes. Commercial flame retardant foam was compared to the same foam with a small amount of long-chained polymer PEO.

Foam lifetimes lengthened, and to understand why the surface tension was measured. Our force tensiometer was used to measure the liquid-air/foam interface, and a marked difference in surface tension was noted. The conclusion reached was that PEO forms a complex with the flame retardant surfactants, creating a ‘pearl necklace’ pattern with micelle ‘pearls’ connected by PEO chains.
